Redshirt buffalo stickers banned from Line

Be careful how you color your crudely drawn buffaloes.

Naver Corp. has removed a collection of “red buffalo” stickers created by a Redshirt activist from its Line chat application because they were deemed “slanderous.”

Red Buffalo (Khwai Daeng), originally intended as an insult to Redshirts due to the buffalo’s status as a symbol of stupidity, eventually became embraced by the group as an unofficial mascot.

So it shouldn’t be surprising Line’s popularity would see Red Buffalo stickers created as another form of merchandising, like the popular – yet banned from Chiang Mai markets – Red Buffalo T-shirts.

The stickers were reportedly available for download for 24 hours, according to Khaosod English.

The admin of the Facebook page “Khwai Daeng,” who admits to creating the stickers, said the set had become the eighth most popular sticker on Line’s Thai store before it was removed and has now become a rare item.

He has put the 40 sticker designs online for followers to save them and use as photo attachments in the messaging app.

Meanwhile, the totally innocent “Crazy Buffalo” stickers remain available on the store.
