It’s official. After checking the feasibility over the past several days while the bridge has been functional but simply closed, officials have decided to demolish Ratchayothin Overpass to make room for the BTS Green Line extension. They will build a tunnel to replace the overpass. The work should take as long as two years.
The committee on traffic resolution in the Bangkok metropolitan area granted jurisdiction to the Mass Transit Authority of Thailand to construct a new overpass and tunnel through Ratchayothin Intersection, reported Thai News Bureau.
Acting Deputy Commissioner of the Royal Thai Police Pol. Gen. Dejnarong Suthichanbancha revealed that the committee’s resolution will take effect overnight, resulting in the closure of the Ratchayothin Overpass and the construction of a new bridge and tunnel.
Pol. Gen. Dejnarong revealed that the trial closure of the overpass had mostly affected Lad Phrao intersection, with traffic backing up as far as Bang Kapi district. He has redistributed police officers to facilitate traffic in the most affected areas.
