Raonic overpowers Berdych in Thailand Open final

The hard-serving Milos Raonic upset top-seeded Tomas Berdych 7-6 (4), 6-3 at the Thailand Open on Sunday.

The Canadian served 18 aces to beat Berdych in the final at the Impact Arena in 1 hour, 17 minutes. Raonic hit 23 aces on his way to victory over defending champion Richard Gasquet 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in Saturday’s semifinal.

Berdych, who needed nearly three hours to knock out Gilles Simon of France 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-5 in his semifinal on Saturday, had his chances in the match with a set point at 6-5 in the first but he couldn’t capitalise on it.

Raonic managed an early break in the second game to take a 2-0 lead in the second set after Berdych netted two successive shots. At 5-3, Raonic produced another ace to set up a championship point before blasting a forehand winner to take the match.

In the doubles final, third-seeded Jamie Murray of Great Britain and John Peers beat fourth-seeded Tomasz Bednarek and Johan Brunstrom 6-3, 3-6, 10-6.
