Ryan Gosling was a notable no show at the Oscars in Los Angeles Sunday night, presumably because he’s here in Bangkok working on muay thai action pic Only God Forgives.
Forgives is Gosling’s second collaboration with Nicolas Winding Refn, the director of last year’s Gosling-starring smash car chase movie Drive. Many felt Drive was snubbed for an Oscar nom, so perhaps that’s why Gosling skipped the awards?
Still, other felt that he should have showed up to support Ides Of March, in which he also starred and which was up for best writing for George Clooney, Grant Heslov, and Beau Willimon.
Willimon was asked about Gosling’s absence in an interview at the Oscars.“That’s what I think is fantastic about him: his work ethic and his determination and his love for making movies. Sometimes he comes to these things, and sometimes he’s busy,” he said. “But as long as he keeps making movies, that’s the important thing.”
And making movies he is. In Thailand, no less!
Our intelligence here at Coconuts has indicated that Gosling is (or was) staying at the St. Regis in Bangkok’s ritzy Rajadamri Road. He was spotted a few weeks ago in Thonglor’s WTF Bar and a Japanese restaurant in Emporium cavorting with his current flame Eva Mendes, and the two were photographed separately out and about in Bangkok.
But the star’s been laying low since. So what could he be doing?
He could be hard at work shooting Only God Forgives at a studio in Bangkok, secretly shuttled from his hotel every day away from the prying paparazzi.
He could be on location somewhere else in Thailand for the film. Maybe Chiang Mai, where the last Rambowas shot?
He could be cooling off at some nearby ultra-riche resort. Perhaps Sri Panwa in Phuket, where fellow Hollywood brethren Jeremy Renner is known to get into trouble.
We can only speculate.
