Ninth grade student: ‘I’m not ashamed to help my street sweeper mom’

Thai netizens have expresses their appreciation for a ninth grade student who publicly declared that he never felt embarrassed to get his hands dirty by helping his mother sweep the streets.

A photo of Suphanat “Pon” Sriyod holding a broom by his mother’s side has surfaced online in the past few days. It has attracted numerous positive comments regarding Pon’s maturity and the fact that he did not shy away from his mother’s low-ranking job.

“I was a little bit embarrassed at first, afraid to be laughed at” Pon told Channel 3. “But I realized that my education was all along funded by her salary. And I don’t know why I have to feel that way anymore.”

Pon – a 14-year-old student at Wat Ratchabophit School – cited his mother’s age and health as his main concerns, which had prompted him to help her since he was in the fourth grade.

“I don’t know how long my mother will stay with me,” said Pon. “My mom has done everything for me. If she is not here, I would have felt like something is missing in my life.”
