ExpectingExpats is a new online community for those who have a bun in the oven whilst living in a strange land. It aims to be a haven where expatriate moms and moms-to-be can share their experiences about being pregnant, learn from one another, ask questions, and seek advice about having a baby abroad. The site also features free advice given by real doctors.
ExpectingExpats combines blogging from moms and open discussions about pregnancy topics with real doctors chiming in the conversation. A panel of Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital gynecologists were tapped to constantly provide answers to community questions and dispense pregnancy advise.
The site was developed Bangkok’s Bedside Media. Its co-founder Merritt Gurley stressed that having a baby overseas can be difficult and stressful without the support of family and friends. By creating the community site, she said, the bonds of the expat community will be fostered – resulting to a tightly-knit circle of moms.
ExpectingExpats also gives expat moms-to-be a clearer picture of their birthing options in Bangkok. Just by browsing the site and participating in forum discussions, they will be able to decide for themselves which options work and which don’t. The doctors from Samitivej Sukhumvit Hospital are very patient and thorough in answering questions about pre natal care, c-sections and screening for pre-natal abnormalities.
Ms Gurley noted that even with the best medical care in the world, expecting moms can still learn a lot from the advice of fellow expat moms.
