Thailand’s burgeoning drift racing scene is about to get a whole lot more exciting with the official Thailand launch of D1, a Japanese-sanctioned international drift league. Coconuts turned to the Kingdom’s very own Kiki Sak Nana, captain of the Red Bull Drift Team, to get the scoop on the three-round, tire squeelin’ smoke show.
“Every team in this series is a top team, and Japanese drivers are known for being very competitive, so we’re not underestimating anyone” says the famous drifter. This will be the first time Thailand will see face-to-face competition with Japan’s top drifters on a Thai track.
D1 has been in Japan since 2001, but in 2010 the series went international, and Thailand is welcoming its 2012 arrival with a three-round series taking place in Bangkok and Khon Khaen or Khao Yai (this detail will be decided soon). The first round, held at the Lake Side race track at Muangthongtaani runs concurrently with the Japan Auto Salon at Impact Arena – this two-for-one event is the race to go to if you’re not die hard enough to make the trek out to Isaan for the second round semi-finals.
Thailand’s Red Bull Drift Team will be competing with five drivers: Ju, Tong, Pond, Ivan and Team Captian Kiki Sak Nana, who will be using his infamous drift-prepped Nissan that has seen competition in Malaysia and the USA. “I’ll be using the Nissan Silvia S15 for this race, and we really don’t know what to expect in terms of the competition, so we’re all committed to doing more than our best.”
Come see the Red Bull Team tear it up at these venues:
Round 1-2 at Lake Side Muangthongtaani : 30 June – 1 July
Round 3-4 at Bonanza or Khon-Kaen : 8 – 9 September
Round 5-6 at Wonder World : 10 – 11 November
