The ever-so-coveted Apple iPad is cheaper to buy in Bangkok than any other city in the world, according to a recent study from Swedish research group PriceRunner.
PriceRunner compared prices in 32 major world cities and found that Bangkok was the cheapest place to buy an 32GB iPad 2 with WiFi, where it said it retails for an average of USD547.58 (THB16,904) or 77% of the average price around the world.
Buenos Aires was found to be the most expensive place in the world to buy an iPad, at USD1,057.93 (THB32,659) or 150% of the average price.
We haven’t been iPad shopping lately here at Coconuts Bangkok, so we’re not up on prices. But the Thailand Apple Store online said a 32GB iPad 2 with WiFi costs THB22,900. We can imagine vendors at Fortune IT Mall and Pantip Plaza are undercutting prices a bit but THB17,00 sounds too cheap!
The study in fact found that Bangkok was the second cheapest city surveyed in the world after Mumbai. We’re a little skeptical though, as it named notoriously expensive US cities San Francisco and New York as numbers five and ten, respectively.
PriceRunner found that Bangkok was also the cheapest city in the world to buy two other key items: MacBook Airs and diapers. That’s right, they calculated that a new 13-inch MacBook Air costs USD1,354 (USD41,799) here while a pack of Pampers New Baby Diapers costs USD4.66 (THB144).
