A YouTube clip that claims to represent a farang perspective on Thailand has been circulating in the Thai online community.
Entitled “Email from Thailand,” the two-minute sketch starts off with an undergrad-looking young woman writing an email relating her impressions of the Kingdom.
“Dear Mom, I’m really enjoying Thailand. I’ve only been here two months and I’ve already seen so many amazing things,” she wrote before adding the juicy twist to her letter. “And some kind of strange things as well.”
The video then shifts its focus, ironically juxtaposing a variety of images that illustrate the difference between what the young woman says to her mom and what she actually discovers.
“I discovered that Wat Phra Kaew was not the only famous attraction in Thailand. There are many opportunities to see Thai cultures in Bangkok,” she says in her email while images of Patpong flash in the background.
“Email from Thailand,” uploaded by YouTube user nasaboyz on Feb. 28, is gaining momentum as its total views approach 10,000. Many netizens have shared different opinions toward the clip.
“There are so many good things to discover in Thailand,” commented YouTube user OriginsCM. “If you come to travel and you can see or think of only these stuff, please don’t come again.”
“This is the truth that we deem unacceptable once it’s exposed,” said commentator MrMinhaas. “But we’ll continue doing it.”
According to the credit at the end of the clip, the skit is produced by a group of Thai undergraduates from various universities.
