Quarter million Spaniards call for Yuyee’s release

Hundred of thousands of Spanish netizens have signed onto a campaign urging Thailand to release “Yuyee,” a former Thai model and wife of a Spanish TV host.

Two weeks after Chatchaya “Yuyee” Cuesta Ramos was sentenced to 15 years in prison for smuggling 250 milligrams of cocaine through Don Mueang Airport two years ago, more than 250,000 signatures have been collected on online petitions “freeyuyee” and “justice4yuyee.”

At the heart of their campaign are questions about the Thai justice system’s handling of her case.

The campaign “justice4yuyee” by Adrián Fernández questions the evidence used to obtain a conviction. It points to reports in Thai media from the time of her 2012 arrest saying she trafficked just five milligrams of cocaine, whereas that amount inexplicably increased to 250 milligrams in trial earlier this month.

Madrid resident Fernández wrote in his campaign that Yuyee and her husband Frank Cuesta, a wildlife documentary host, have spent many years fighting for the protection of the animals and presented the beauty of Thailand through their work. He believed the punishment for Yuyee was unfair.

After the trial, Yuyee’s plea for bail was also rejected by the Criminal Court as they fear she is a flight risk.
