Purple Line stretching northwest ahead of schedule

While bigger transportation projects languish in uncertainty, Bangkok’s network of blended rail systems continues to grow.

Construction is 90 percent finished on the rail extension from the Tao Poon junction near the MRT blue line’s terminal station at Bang Sue to Khlong Bang Phai in Nakhon Pathom province.

The Purple Line’s train system itself is about one-quarter complete, but the Mass Rapid Transit Authority expects to field trial runs in late 2015 with the line opening several months ahead of schedule in mid-2016, authority Gov. Yongsit Rojsrikul said Monday.

Sixteen stations will comprise the northwestern line, which will stretch 23 kilometers.

Later a 20-kilometer extension will connect Tao Poon to the Phra Pradaeng district in Samut Prakan province.

By the end of the year, the authority plans to sign four contracts worth THB29 billion for the Dark Green Line from Mo Chit north past Don Mueang Airport to Pathum Thani’s Lam Luk Ka district, Bangkok Post reported.
