A white Persian cat arises from a cloud of pansies like a genie. Feline faces with imposing manga-like eyes appear in its body. Cupcakes and macaroons dot a backdrop of pastel hues.
The scene is typical of what you’ll see at artist Prang Vejjajiva solo exhibition, “I Wonder a Wonderland,” launching next month at Koi Art Gallery.
Prang, daughter of former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, will take viewers on a saccharine-filled acid trip through concepts of joy and escape with her paintings. Innocent felines – Prang’s inspiration for the series – and dreamlike everyday objects make for subjects. A hallucinogenic paradise of cutesy creatures with twinkling eyes set amongst a landscape soft pastels will have you wondering if the Beatle’s “Yellow Submarine” is playing in the background, or if it’s just your imagination.
Each work in “I Wonder a Wonderland” depicts a different type of joy and escape, from the enjoyment of a delicious meal to the feeling of personal freedom. Imagination is at the heart of the exhibition, both in Prang’s surreal perspectives and your own – as you’ll stare and wonder, “Where the hell am I and what am I on?”
Prang Vejjajiva’s “I Wonder a Wonderland” exhibition is on display from July 4 to July 31 at Koi Art Gallery. Koi features contemporary works of art by emerging and established artists from Thailand and abroad.
