Four members of the punk band Blood Soaked Street of Social Decay — arguably one of the better band names we’ve heard in awhile — along with Kuea Purepunk, a singer famous in Thailand’s underground music scene, were detained by police on Saturday following a performance where they sang controversial political tunes calling out junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha by name.
The band was one of the eight punk acts to play at a Saturday concert demanding democracy held in front of the 14th October Memorial, the monument in Bangkok to remember civilians killed by the military during a pro-democracy rally on that date in 1973.
A video of the band’s performance shows them singing and screaming, “Prayuth, you f*cker! Prayuth, you dick!” repeatedly as the Kuea Purepunk (the red-haired dude) joined them on stage and the crowd went wild. The tune, Coconuts later discovered, is titled Bastard Government, and available for streaming.
The concert ended with the burning of the concert’s vinyl poster, which featured a photo of the prime minister.
Following the stunt, the organizer and the band were detained by police, but they were later released after the cops didn’t know what to charge them with. (They can’t be charged with defamation unless the PM files a complaint about it.)
The organizer wrote on the concert’s Facebook page: “Our concert was so aggressive, especially during the performance of Blood Soaked Street of Social Decay, which talked about all the characters in the military government.
“The result is the organizer and the band were detained by police for questioning, but at the end they could not prosecute us.”
