Protesters force election staff to flee stadium

After camping outside for three days to disrupt election registration efforts, anti-government protesters stormed and sealed the venue, forcing government election workers to flee.

Protesters aligned with the People′s Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State reportedly rammed a truck through the gate of the Thai-Japanese Youth Centre stadium, wrapped it in a large flag and blocked access to the buliding for workers tasked with registering political parties for the Feb. 2 elections. They also entered the building and its gymnasium.

Election workers had intended to continue their limited-time registration period this morning after protesters said last night they would quit their blockade of the stadium.

The registration period ends Friday, and the Election Commission has said it will not extend the deadline, MCOT Online reported.
