Prayuth breaks it down in English for Australian reporter

Junta Chief Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha took the opportunity to address a foreign reporter in her native language yesterday.

Responding to questions over his democratic intentions for Thailand, Prayuth rebuffed offers to help translating and made his own sporting go of it for Australian reporter Samantha Hawley.

“How can we reform my country? Many things must be special but not limit the freedom or anything. I try to make you understand, na. Many other country in Asean understand me because Asean is not the same, but the principle of democracy, I understand that.”

He then attempted to illustrate his argument with a metaphor involving buttons on his shirt.

“Thailand is a … look like a shirt, and the button the button … like this. The wrong, maybe … Thailand not only this, but maybe shirt and trousers.”
