Prime Minister Gen. Prayuth Chan-o-cha will give up one month of his salary to help battle the COVID-19 outbreak.

Following Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, government spokesperson Narumon Pinyosinwat said that Prayuth offered to set up a fund to help the health ministry and medical staff tackle the coronavirus outbreak in which Thailand has stricken at least 43 and killed one

Prayuth offered to support creation of the fund with his THB125,590 (US$4,000) salary. That’s nice, considering he is a multi-millionaire (USD).

While he’s not compelling other cabinet members to do the same, some offered to follow Prayuth’s lead including members of the communications team and Environment Minister Warawut Silpa-archa, the scion of a construction and political dynasty.

The current salary for prime minister is THB125,590 (US$4,000), deputy prime minister THB119,920 (US$3,800) and Minister THB115,740 (US$3,700).

Just last week, Singapore Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat announced that the island’s highly-paid politicians would take one-month pay cuts while medical workers battling on the frontlines of the COVID-19 outbreak would receive up to a month’s bonus.
