Junta chief Prayuth Chan-ocha plans to crack down on “local mafias” because they have no fear of the law under the military.
Prayuth said they disturb peace and order, citing a recent case when loan sharks opened fire on the house of a woman who owed them THB4,000.
The prime minister said he can no longer tolerate such actions.
“Hearing of these people using such weapons to hurt and threaten civilians or people who owe them money is intolerable to me. Who can tolerate such a thing? What gives them the right to just shoot anyone they choose? And while this government is in power,” he said.
Prayuth said he expects to see results from the the mafia crackdown in six months and it has nothing to do with politics, reported ThaiPBS.
People who use war weapons to commit crimes are the enemy, not political opponents, he said.
