Prayers and candlelight: Buddhist monks celebrate Makha Bucha Day (PHOTOS)

While most Bangkokians celebrated having the day off work yesterday, thousands of Buddhist monks marked Makha Bucha Day with prayers and candelight ceremonies at temples across the country, including the famous Wat Phra Dhammakaya temple in Pathum Thani’s Khlong Luang district.

The public holiday marks the anniversary of Buddha’s first major sermon, when he ordained around 1,250 monks and taught them the basic principles of Buddhism.

Thais traditionally give alms to monks, and go to the temple to listen to sermons and take part in the candelight ceremony.
