While most Bangkokians celebrated having the day off work yesterday, thousands of Buddhist monks marked Makha Bucha Day with prayers and candelight ceremonies at temples across the country, including the famous Wat Phra Dhammakaya temple in Pathum Thani’s Khlong Luang district.

The public holiday marks the anniversary of Buddha’s first major sermon, when he ordained around 1,250 monks and taught them the basic principles of Buddhism.
