Poll shows that more Thais believe corruption is expanding

Between December 2012 and June 2013, the percentage of Thai citizens who believe that corruption plagues the Thai government rose from a shocking 63% to an even more shocking 74%.

The poll from which this data is culled, conducted by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC), surveyed 2,400 respondents, who were asked to weigh in on questions regarding the role of graft in Thai infrastructure and development projects.

The UTCC estimates that in 2013, corruption will cost the Thai public more than THB235 billion.

his figure, however, is unlikely to decrease in coming years, based on the fact that many Thais have proven willing to deal with corruption as part of their day-to-day lives. The Nation reports that although Thailand’s Tolerance of Corruption Index rose from 3.08 to 3.30 during the past year, this number is still remarkably high.
