Poll: Most Thais want Feb. 2 election to proceed

Four out of five Thais intend to participate in the Feb. 2 election if it proceeds as planned, and most oppose a coup by the military, according to a nationwide poll.

In a poll of more than 1,000 adults conducted from Monday through yesterday, Bangkok University found wide support for snap elections nine days from now, and 56 percent of respondents said they opposed a military coup, even if violence escalates further. One in 10 said they would not participate in the election, and 21.6 percent of those polled said they would support a political intervention by the military.

Nearly half – 47.4 percent – said the past three months of demonstrations have not changed their opinion about whether to vote, whereas 18.3 percent said it has di6scouraged them from voting.

When it came to the specific question of whether elections should be held on Feb. 2, a slim majority – 51.5 percent – agreed. Another 28.1 percent said elections must come after some type of national reform effort, and 20.4 percent said current election plans should be postponed, Bangkok Post reported.
