Police threaten checkpoint spoilers with prosecution

The heat is on for anyone who goes online to spoil the police’s fun by blabbing about where they’ve set up checkpoints.

The top national cop yesterday threatened users of popular forums such as “We Love Police Stop,” where realtime information is posted about such checkpoints, with being accessories to crime because illegal street racers can use the information to move their midnight club meetings.

Police Gen. Somyot Poompanmoung said yesterday prosecuting people for posting what they see in the road is one approach to be considered Monday when authorities devise their strategy for their crackdown du jour against illegal street racers.

Another approach being weighed is revoking racers’ driving licenses for three months, six months or even for life.

Shifting gears to other social ills that have become policy priorities to the military government, Somyot suggested they might invoke the absolute power card of Article 44 shut down illegal sales of alcohol near school campuses.

Article 44 is a powerful new tool for authorities, who’ve long been stymied by activities merely classified as “illegal.”
