Police hunt ‘serial rapist’ preying on Lumphini Park sex workers

Police today are still searching for a bronze-grey Volkswagen van allegedly used by a serial rapist in an abduction and murder near Lumphini Park.

Col. Sutee Sanehlaksana, chief of Thung Maha Mek Police, said his team is investigating security cameras near the location where a 35-year-old woman was forced into the vehicle and likely sexually assaulted at around 3am yesterday before being let go.

The woman’s boyfriend jumped onto the van as it sped away, leading the driver to intentionally crash into a traffic sign near the Thai-Belgium Bridge. The man died later of his injuries at a hospital.

Sutee said the suspect is a man in his 40s with a slight build and “droopy mouth.”

The streets around Lumphini Park are popular cruising spots for sex workers. Other sex workers who witnessed the abducition told the police it wasn’t the first time it had happened and described the attacker as a sadist.

The woman, whose name was not revealed but described as a sex worker in reports, was later seen walking down the road. She was naked from the waist down and her hands and neck were bound in tape.

The van’s license plate was covered with a handwritten number reading “ตบ 3374.” Police said no such plate has been registered.

Sutee said police have not pinned down a motivation for the attack.
