Police dismiss reports Karadag confessed to being ‘backpack man’

Police and the lawyer of Adem Karadag, the first suspect caught over the Bangkok bombings, dismissed media reports he had confessed to being the yellow-shirted suspect with a backpack who allegedly planted the bomb inside the Erawan Shrine.

Police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri said this morning he cannot confirm the reports published by local newspapers that Karadag confessed to being the perpetrator of the Erawan shrine blast on Aug. 17.

The Bangkok Post quoted an anonymous security source this morning who said that Karadag allegedly admitted to being the yellow-shirted man and claimed he disguised himself in a wig and glasses.

The source also said that new evidence had turned the police’s attention back to Karadag who was caught at a room in Pool Anan apartment in Nong Chok district. Police also discovered bomb-making materials in the room.

The latest evidence comes from CCTV footage taken in Lumpini Park showing the yellow-shirted man, who allegedly placed the bomb on a bench inside the shrine, going into a toilet in the park before coming out in a grey T-shirt.

The man in the footage leaving the toilet resembles Karadag, the source told the Bangkok Post.

The man later took a public bus to the apartment in Nong Chok.

Karadag’s lawyer Choochart Khanphai said this morning that reports of the alleged confession are “unusual as even the police spokesman’s office still refused to confirm it.”

Choochart said he hasn’t seen his client since Wednesday and does not expect to see him until Monday, the Bangkok Post reported.
