Police apprehend American for stabbing two tourists in Chiang Mai

Police have arrested a foreigner for stabbing two tourists in Chiang Mai last night, according to Chiang Mai superintendent Phuwanat Duangdee. The police told reporters during a press briefing Thursday morning that the suspect, a 28-year-old American identified as Brian Andrew Burggraf, was arrested for stabbing tourists around the city. 

The incident was first reported around 6pm by the owner of the Home Bar 1981 in Mun Mueang road southeast of the old city when she told authorities that the suspect began brandishing a knife and stabbed two foreigners in the vicinity, a Norwegian who is currently in ICU critical condition and another who was described as a white person of average height. 

Municipal and tourist police arrested the suspect around 1.30pm outside the Jed Yod Plaza marketplace. Police said he will be charged with causing bodily harm to others and is expected to face legal proceedings.

The incident sparked surprise in a city that is usually known for its peace and hospitality.

Attention was also brought via Reddit, in which CCTV images and video were shared of the perpetrator. In these images, the suspect can be seen wearing a long-sleeved shirt and shorts.
