Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will ceremoniously remove the shackles of several hundred prisoners on May 15 in a gesture meant to improve the rights of inmates.
Around 500 of Thailand’s 800 death row prisoners have been chosen for the leniency scheme being introduced by the Corrections Department. Those chosen are death row inmates and prisoners with death sentences under lower-court rulings but are still awaiting the Supreme Court’s final verdict.
This move is being initiated by the Truth for Reconciliation Commission of Thailand (TRCT). The Independent National Rule of Law Commission (NRLC) has praised the initiative for complying with international standards on human rights, the Nation reported.
