Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha will break from tradition by taking over management of Thailand’s national investigative agency.

Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin’s Monday announcement that the Department of Special Investigation, or DSI, would be put under Prayuth’s purview gives the former junta leader broad authority over its investigations. Prayuth will oversee the handling of criminal cases, some of which involve his political opponents.

Prayuth also supervises the entire Royal Thai Police force and serves as Defense Minister.

In the past, the DSI was led by appointees. It operates under the Justice Ministry, which is now headed by Somsak of the Palang Pracharath Party
