Before a work is finished and a name signed to it, what is art? A process on display or infinite possibilities unrealized? That’s the question “The Piece Is Not Completed Yet” hopes to answer.
“This Piece” is a solo dance performance opening Friday by Kornkarn “Kade” Rungsawang of the Pichet Klunchun Dance Company. It’s the unfinished product of collaboration born of an expressed idea and mid-step toward achieving its concrete achievement of beauty.
The performance aims to give audiences exclusive access to the making-of experience behind its production and staff. The piece may not be fully realized, but the performance is.
Dissident dance master Pichet Klunchun, a 2006 Silpathorn Award winning performance artist, begins his second decade with his dance troupe with this to-be-completed piece aiming to challenge his dancers with complex dimensions. Pichet doesn’t perform or direct but steps offstage as lighting designer.
Pichet rejects dance as a static series of steps following the same formula and his evocative performances unwind the form down to its simplest elements of expression in search of something new and sudden.
“I hated it before I loved it” Pichet didn’t say, but you may.
