Photo Essay: The ruins of Rod Fai Market

Rod Fai Market, aka the “Train Market,” will open its doors to vintage fanatics at its original site for the last time this weekend.

Next week, the Market will move to a warehouse behind Insquare Mall JJ, where it will continue to conduct business for the next five months. After that, the Market will take on a private lot on Srinakarin Road Soi 15 as its new, long-term shelter. The Srinakarin Road contract is set to last 15 years.

Coconuts photographer Kajornsak Intarapong roamed around Rod Fai Market this morning documenting the damage done to its grounds by Tuesday’s abrupt demolition. In June, the Rod Fai Market will be completely demolished, making way for construction of the Bang Sue-to-Rang Sit, “Red Line” Skytrain extension.

The Market will keep its “Rod Fai” moniker, but all Bangkokians know that the title will lose its magic, and the market itself will lose some of its vintage vibe, once it is displaced from its original haunts.
