Photo Essay: Bangkok Auto Salon 2013

The concept behind the 2013 Bangkok Auto Salon was lifted from Japan – the heart of automotive tinkering. This year the Salon featured a balanced mix of Japanese tuner cars and exotic whips, with an abundance of pretties to distract the almost exclusively male audience.

You’d have been remiss, however, to let yourself get distracted by the eye candy, as there were some immensely cool carriages like Singha’s “funny car,” which can hit speeds of over 400 km/hr. European car fans had plenty to take pride in as well, as a repertoire of Italian beasts found their way into the show. Those on-hand included Ferrari’s 458 Challenge race car – a factory-produced race car meant to compete in Ferrari-sanctioned events. Lamborghini rounded up a Gallardo Super Trofeo, and an Aventador, in a display of Italian automotive prowess. Although they hail from distant decades, a fleet of 1970’s RWB tuned Porsches turned up to represent the famous Porsche marque from Germany, as well.

Since the Auto Salon does hail from Japan, it’s no surprise that tuner cars were the event’s primary focus. The king of the 2013 Japanese racing scene – the mighty Nissan GTR – was prominently featured at over a dozen Nipponese stations.

Of course, we can’t gloss over the women. Thai car conventions simply wouldn’t exist without a small army of buxom cheerleaders. As expected, saddled on the engines of many a chariot were librarians, schoolgirls and women dressed as cats. Coconuts was especially fond of a car washing/dancing demonstration that showcased Japanese talent. Until next year!
