Sip it up kids, those dazed days of savoring the sizzurp could be ending if access to that sweet, sweet promethazine dries up.
New regulations requiring pharmacists record the names and personal information of anyone buying cough syrup and allergy medication were recently enacted and announced today in state media.
The new rules come after public health officials sounded the alarm earlier this month over the the latest toxic import of a bygone fad from the United States.
Not Krispy Kreme. We’re talking about “Purple Drank,” “Lean,” “Sizzurp,” a homemade, narcotic-like cocktail easily dewed up from cough syrup, soft drinks and hard candy.
In the United States, cough syrup ingredient promethazine is now a strictly regulated drug, and the new rules from the Thai Food and Drug Administartion are aimed at making it more difficult to brew the purple stuff.
Called ya pro by students, the Thai twist is substituting easily found tramadol hydrochloride for the codeine of the original.
If taking names of buyers doesn’t work due to uneven enforcement, they could always consider banning pharmacies near schools.
