Peace Index: Thailand among bottom-third of nations

Apart from Myanmar, Thailand has been deemed less peaceful than all of its Southeast Asian neighbors and among the bottom-third of all nations, according to an Australian-based NGO.

According to the 2014 “Global Peace Index” released today by the Institute for Economics and Peace, Thailand ranks 126th out of 162 nations in terms of “peacefulness.”

Terrorist activity, attributable to the past decade’s daily horrors in the kingdom’s south, combined with violent demonstrations and criminal violence were among the top factors contributing to Thailand’s low score.

However the snapshot of Thailand seems dated by a couple months as its national profile was completed before a military coup overthrew civilian rule last month.
