Patient burns to death in hospital bed

A patient tied to his bed at the Rama II Hospital burned to death last night.

The body of Manoch Thepsa-nguan, 42, was found tied to his bed in his fourth floor room at the hospital after a fire broke out around 11:30pm. Manoch, diagnosed with chronic lung disease, had been admitted Friday.

Hospital security had tied Manoch to his bed because during a previous stay he had attempted to harm himself, hospital staff said, even attempting to jump out of a window.

Before the fire started last night, Manoch had asked a nurse to let him go out for a smoke, but he was not allowed, according to Dr. Peerapat Kananuwat, hospital director.

The hospital has transferred some patients who stayed on the fourth and fifth floors to Petchkasem Hospital while the investigation is being conducted.

The fire was put out before it spread,  but the cause has yet to be confirmed, Khaosod reported.

Until then, it would only appear that a mentally ill, suicidal man with a possibly terminal illness burned himself to death.
