A lithium ion battery was blamed for a fire which broke out yesterday on a Bangkok-bound flight from Amsterdam.
Smoke began pouring into the cabin from a fire inside an overhead baggage compartment on the KLM plane before a flight attendant expertly extinguished it.
The plane had just touched down at Suvarnabhumi Airport, and no one was reported injured.
Twitter user @Accone was a passenger on flight KL875 and posted images and a video of the incident. She also suggested it was started by a lithium ion battery.
A KLM spokesman declined to comment on the fire’s cause while it was still being investigated, Daily Mail Online reported.
Lithium ion batteries, commonly used in “power bank” devices to recharge mobile devices, have been blamed for a number of fires.
While airlines do not ban them from flights, stricter rules have been imposed requiring, in most cases, they be carried into the cabin inside carry-on luggage.
