Paint piles up on famous Mamafaka street mural near BTS Ratchathewi

Nothing’s permanent on the street. Such is the way with street art – where public space is the canvas and artists’ fame is built by notoriety – the most popular works become victims of their own popularity.

Arguably the most popular place to spray in Bangkok is now a stretch of wall near the BTS Ratchathewi station, where just one month ago fans retaliated in a novel way to the “bombing” of a late artist’s best-known work. And that paint-over job, used to promote an exhibition of the late Mamafaka’s work next month, was recently partially painted over again.

At least this time it was a little less amateurish. Running across the bottom of what was essentially a wall-sized flyer for the Mamafaka exhibition, it’s the work of London-based, American street artist Alex Martinez, also known as “Shine.”
