Overpass falls onto Nonthaburi road after crashed by BTS construction truck

Four cars were crushed when a mislabeled pedestrian overpass collapsed after being struck by a truck carrying a giant load in Nonthaburi province last night.

The truck, which appeared to be carrying a steel bridge, rammed into the overpass near the Pibulsongkram intersection hard enough to send it crashing down onto cars parked in the area at around 9pm. Luckily, no injuries or deaths were reported.

The truck was transporting its load from the BTS purple line construction project to a warehouse in Bangkok’s Bang Phlat district when the accident happened.

The driver said he usually takes another route, but local police had recommended his company use the Liang Muang Nonthaburi Road, where the accident happened.

The oversized truck was led by a police car under the overpass, which was labeled five-meters high. The truck would have fit, but as it turned out, the bridge’s clearance was not actually five meters. The sign lied.

It took all night for work crews to cut the overpass into pieces and remove them from the road, Thai PBS News and Sanook reported.
