Outbreak: 16,000 Thais have gotten the pink eye

Raise your head and look around your office or classroom. See those red, watery eyes with crusted lids? Too late, you’ve probably got pink eye already.

So far this year, an outbreak of conjunctivitis has struck 15,964 people, according to the last count said Dr. Sopon Mekthon of the Department of Disease Control.

Usually associated with children, the disease’s hardest hit group has been adults 35- to 44-years old, he said.

The disease seems to resurface and spread widely every two to three years, he added.

Pink eye is rarely life-threatening, especially if people mind their hygiene.

To avoid it, officials suggest frequently washing hands, not sharing makeup or towels with others and making sure pools are clean and chlorinated, Thairath reported.
