The morning after: 1 million krathong end up Bangkok garbage

What can look so lovely by candlelight never looks as good the morning after.

The loy krathong cleanup was completed this morning to make clear waterways for normal use and today’s tally from city hall counted 982,064 krathong floated by Bangkokians this year, about 120,000 more than last year.

Fortunately campaigns to convince people to use degradable materials instead of plastic foam seem to be working. The city said 91 percent cared for the environment by choosing krathong made from banana leaves, corn and bread.

The krathong waste will be sent to the On Nut, Tha Raeng and Nong Kham garbage disposal units, Kapook reported.
