One killed, four injured when small plane crashes into Bangkok canal

A private plane went down into a canal in Nong Chok district yesterday afternoon, resulting in one dead and four injuries.

The Piper PA-31-350 Chieftain aircraft, operated by Rabbit Wings Co., crashed near Lam Phra Ong Temple about 4:30am, killing its pilot.

The plane was reportedly flying back from Nakhon Ratchasima to Suvarnabhumi International Airport, but its radar disappeared on the way, prompting airport staff to alert authorities, according to Bangkok Post.

According to witnesses, it is believed the captain attempted to make an emergency landing in the canal, which was large enough. However, the plane was coming on too fast and crashed into a wooden bridge, resulting in one death, Komchadluek reported.

The deceased was identified as Sirawut Tiewprasert while the four people who sustained injuries — two on board and two bystanders — were sent to hospitals.

The two other people on board were its co-pilot Petty Officer 2nd Class Pitak Sobted, 34, and passenger Sitthiporn Thanasung, 44. They both worked for Rabbit Wings Co.

Two residents in the area where the plane crashed were also injured — Prapin Prempree, 48, and Arun Kaewson, 78.

Police are working to determine the cause of the crash.
