Construction has been halted on a downtown mixed-use mega-project after three construction workers were killed there.
Police were questioning witnesses today after the bodies of three workers were recovered from the wreckage of several collapsed levels. Four others were injured, according to Col. Nimit Noophonthong of Lumphini Police. All were Thai nationals, Nimit said.
Matwan Pinsuwan, director of the Pathumwan District Office, said the construction site has been sealed for investigation. The national engineering council is expected to brief the public on Friday.
The workers died Tuesday while pouring concrete, according to a statement from the contractor, Italian-Thai Development. However, they were missing overnight and not found until Wednesday morning.
Photos from the site show what looks like several floors collapsed in a tangle of twisted steel reinforcements and rebar.
The families of the victims will be compensated, Italian-Thai said. The company also promised to coordinate with the authorities and experts in the investigation.
Workplace fatalities are fairly common at the kingdom’s construction sites, with companies and their owners rarely held accountable for safety lapses.
One Bangkok is a sprawling real estate development by TCC Assets and Frasers Property that will feature 1.83 million square meters of gross floor area. Backed by THB 120 billion (US$3.5 billion), the project will include commercial offices, retail, hospitality, and residential, as well as cultural, green and open spaces.
The first phase of One Bangkok is anticipated to open next year.
