Old is new: Police revisit strategies for traffic war

Tried-and-true traffic measures that were tried-and-failed in Bangkok should be resumed with the enforcement necessary to make them work, Bangkok’s top traffic cop said yesterday.

Topping that list are bus and high-occupancy lanes, said Police Maj. Gen. Adul Narongsak.

Bus lanes – first introduced in 1980 but ignored by motorists and police – should be re-established to give public transportation priority access to roads.

Also the most congested roads should be limited only to vehicles with three or more occupants, another aborted measure opposed by drivers and forgotten by cops.

Implementing these rules would improve traffic by limiting congestion but more importantly, getting drivers to abandon their cars in favor of efficient public transport.

Both options were under review, as were the streets which might be affected, The Nation reported.
