Oil leaks suspected of killing sea-life, turning water green at Chonburi beach

Oil leaks at Jomtien Beach in Chonburi are suspected to have caused the seawater around the Dor Chada hotel to turn green and smell, leading to the death of sea life.

The Mayor of Najomthien District, Sompong Sainapa, said that the source of the green water is assumed to be cargo ships and fishing boats that are illegally releasing oil into the water.

Another suspect is a local cassava factory, which releases industrial waste water into a canal connected to the sea.

Afraid this might affect tourism, locals are working to clean up the corpses of the dead animals.

Chonburi environmentalists said they have sampled the water and will inspect whether it contains toxic chemicals, the Daily News reported.
