Official who stole cheap hotel paintings in Japan gets fired

The Thai official who found himself in hot water in Japan that wasn’t an onsen, Suphat Saquandeekul, has been officially fired for stealing hotel paintings while on a work trip in January.

It’s kind of a moot point since he had already handed in his resignation over the case, blaming drunkenness for the behavior, but the committee of officials investigating the case unanimously agreed to fire him while saying that he will still get a pension and medical care, reported The Nation.

Suphat, now the former Deputy Director-General of Thailand’s Intellectual Property Department, served the state for over 30 years and this was the first offense that he was caught committing.

He apologized and was never charged in Japan after returning the paintings and paying compensation. The hotel art was only worth THB4,600.
