Officer killed, 61 injured at Thai-Japanese sports stadium

A police officer was killed today in clashes that broke out at an election registration site.

One day before election registration efforts were to end at a Din Daeng venue, the officer was killed in clashes which broke out after police sought to prevent anti-government protesters from disrupting the process.

After hours of confrontation, 61 protesters have been reported injured as well. Sgt. Narong Pitisit was shot in the chest and passed away at the scene by an anonymous. The authorities are still investigating where the bullet came from.

The violence began early this morning when protesters attempted to forcibly enter the stadium, and were met by resistance from police. Clashes continued throughout the day, with protesters throwing petrol and ping pong bombs, while authorities used tear gas and rubber bullets to control the situation.

Among the 61 injuries, 35 have been admitted to six hospitals, Sanook reported.
