Nuh-Uh: Govt rejects fare increase for river boat

A Chao Phraya Express operator enjoys Fast & Furious 6 as he pilots his boat down the Chao Phraya River on Nov. 13.

Never mind that uncertain leap from the pier or shrill whistling, one of Bangkok’s most enjoyable forms of public transit won’t become more expensive.

Although only a few coins buys passage up and down the river via the Chao Phraya Express Boat, the Transport Ministry has denied a request by its operator to raise fares by THB2.

The Chao Phraya Express boat Co. Ltd. had asked Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt for permission increase fares for the first time since 2008 due to the minimum wage hike last year.

With the petition denied, the company however is considering a flat-rate THB10 charge for an entire trip, but expects the government to cover any losses suffered, NNT reported.
