None of the above: Education ministry loses face, students gain free points on flawed exam

Turns out many Mathayom 3 students knew something the Ministry of Education did not.

One spelling mistake on a standardized test given to Mathayom 3 students Sunday has forced the testing bureau to give a free pass to students.

After receiving complaints from many students who knew something was wrong with the O-NET Arts exam, the National Institute of Educational Testing Service announced yesterday that 2.5 points of 100 possible marks would be added to all tests as a spelling error in one multiple choice question left it unanswerable.

A question asking students to identify the national artist of Thai traditional dance misidentified Jamriang Putpradap as “Jamriang Pornpradap.”

The testing organization’s director, Sampan Panpreuk, blamed the error on a mistake in proofreading, and said the organization will proofread all of Mathayom 6’s O-NET tests again which students are scheduled to take this weekend.

Education Minister Chaturon Chaisang was philosophical and forgiving of the mistake on the test which grills students on minute details of Thai culture. Such small mistakes are expected in testing, he said, but the organization needs to make improvements and prevent more mistakes from happening again. He added that the system of national standardized tests used to determine the quality of students and schools is better than school-specific tests, Thairath reported.
