A housing developer is defending its unique “buy one, get one” scheme after some took offense to its provocative promise.
In a recent campaign, the The Icon housing development in Nakhon Ratchasima has promised a “free wife” for every house purchased, prompting complaints from women’s rights groups and other people who generally feel women are not property.
Jadet Chaowilai, director of the Women and Men Progressive Movement, described the campaign as an “insult” to women, according to Matichon. He said he was deeply disturbed that such a sensitive subject like human lives would be used as a marketing campaign solely for profit-seeking purposes.
But were they indeed offering a supply of women for buyers? No, the company said.
In a long-winded nonapology, an executive with the devloper explained the advertisement was gravely “misunderstood,” Khaosod English reported. Boonma Imwiset of the Starwell Co. said that men who bought one of their homes would save a hefty amount of cash which could then be used to fund marriages.
He said that the campaign sympathized with couples who are unable to get married due to financial issues and the campaign was about saving enough money to afford a girlfriend’s dowry.
Boonma did however apologize for anyone confused by the promotion, specifically those disappointed to learn there were actually no free wives.
