In a stroke of genius or absurdity, one teacher in Isaan didn’t let the outbreak’s closure of campuses and gyms keep him from his duties.

The teacher, who demonstrated proper form facedown on a mattress, was winning praise and raised eyebrows today for his bizarre instructional methods delivered to a class of rubber-capped students over Zoom.

“It’s good practice,” K’Kew Thirathep Kunthawe commented on the now-viral photos. “For one day, if the water becomes solid, then we can expertly swim on it.”

The instructor, Sarawut Poca of Ubon Ratchathani University’s arts faculty, told reporters that despite the popular notion that swimming can only be learned by doing, students must also understand theories and techniques before hitting the water. In this case, he said they can be learned and practiced at home on their mattresses.

“It’s not convenient, but it’s necessary, because it’s a continuous class with 30 university students,” he said.

Here’s hoping none of them theoretically drown before actually setting foot in a pool, possibly as soon as next month.
