After Thailand’s record year for tourism in 2012, during which it attracted 22.4 million visitors, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is calling on the Tourism Authority of Thailand to push for quality, rather than quantity in terms of its 2013 visitors.
According to the PM, only 20% of Thailand’s tourist traffic last year consisted of “high-end” visitors, a percentage that she would like to see increased to 30%.
The PM also asked the Tourism Authority to increase the length of visitors’ stays in the Kingdom, while working to make sure that the number of overall visitors to Thailand did not exceed an “appropriate level.”
Excessive tourist traffic, she warned, could place a strain on Thailand’s resources and the resources of its primary aerial gateway: Suvarnabhumi Airport.
