Prime Minster Yingluck Shinawatra has ordered that all of Bangkok’s floodgates be opened to help drain water into the Gulf of Thailand, the AFP has reported.
The move will increase the chance of flooding in Bangkok but lessen the burden and most likely lower water in inundated provinces around the capital.
“I have decided to ask Bangkok to open all gates, which could trigger an overflow, in order to drain water into the sea as soon as possible,” Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said at an emergency meeting. “The longer we block the water the higher it gets,” she said. “We need areas that water can be drained through so the water can flow out to the sea.”
