A pregnant woman gave birth to a baby girl at a supermarket on Sukhumvit 71 this morning. Both mother and daughter were reportedly in good condition.
It was 10:45AM on a Tuesday morning when the woman, whose name was not disclosed, realized that she would not reach the hospital in time for the arrival of her baby. Stuck in a traffic jam in front of a Jusco store, she asked the driver to pull over and carry her out to a marble chair that served as a motorcycle taxi stop.
Detchart Puangkade, a social-media-savvy motorcycle taxi driver who operates at the spot, wrote in his blog that paramedics were sent from Hua Chiew Hospital to help the woman give birth in an open-air operation room. In one of his tweets, Detchart, or @motorcyrubjang, praised the professionalism of Hua Chiew officers, claiming that they worked quickly and dispatched the delivery capably.
Some of Detchart’s followers jokingly sent him a question about whether the baby girl was named Jusco or KFC in honor of her birthplace.
